Women have been slowly advancing in sports and outdoors over the past years, breaking personal and societal barriers while doing so. More and more women are engaging is physical activity and the community is undergoing a positive shift.
In this edition of Community Talks, we welcome adventurer and veteran runner, Ms. Mala Honnatti and distance runner and founder of Delhi Runners Group, Ms. Sangeeta Saikia. Through their incredible stories and experiences, we try to map out how women participation has evolved in sports and outdoors over the past decades and what the future looks like.

Mala is a mountaineer, adventurer, outdoor enthusiast and an accomplished distance runner. She has been active in sports and outdoors since the 1980s and has a long list of achievements. She pursued her passions and achieved commendable heights in mountaineering and laudable medals in marathons. She has trekked and climbed extensively in the Himalayas for over 30 years and has been on Pre-Everest expeditions to Mt. Kamet and Mt. Mamostang Kangri. She has led several mountaineering and climbing expeditions and reached the summit of multiple 6000+m peaks. Mala is also a bronze medallist at Asian Veteran Athletics Championships and National gold medallist at distance running. She has completed dozens of ultra marathons and marathons including, Everest Base Camp Marathon, Antarctica Marathon, Annapurna 50K, New York Marathon just to name a few. She has secured hat-trick gold medals at Mumbai Marathon and also won several other races over the years. She just returned after running The Great Wall of China marathon.
Sangeeta is an avid distance runner and co-founded one of Delhi’s largest running groups – Delhi Runners Group. Like many of us, Sangeeta began her running journey to improve her fitness. Over the past decade, Sangeeta has secured podium finishes at several ultra marathons including Garhwal Run Bangalore Ultra and Bhatti Lakes Ultra. She has also secured podium finishes at several road marathons including Hyderabad Marathon, Airtel Delhi Half Marathon and New Delhi Marathon. As a guide and mentor, she has been supporting several young boys and girls, who are improving year after year at distance running. She is a diehard optimist and an inspiration to many women in the local running community.
